Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro to help people resolve symptoms resulting from disturbing and unresolved life experiences. It uses a structured approach to address past, present, and future aspects of disturbing memories. According to Dr. Shapiro, many emotional problems and disorders are manifestations of these unprocessed trauma memories that are stored in the brain. EMDR works on helping the brain reprocess these traumatic memories, and as a result alleviating the emotional and psychological disorders. In addition to adults, EMDR approach has been used successfully with children and adolescents with a wide variety of emotional and psychological problems including PTSD, Anxiety, phobias, depression attachment disorders etc. The effectiveness of EMDR is supported by several controlled studies; in fact EMDR is the most researched psychotherapeutic treatment for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). In some studies EMDR is as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapies.
Dr. Nikzad received extensive training in EMDR and she is certified by EMDRIA. She has been using EMDR successfully with adults, children, adolescents and couples.
